GS Water Security Devices Project in rural Kenya

GS Water Security Devices Project in rural Kenya

Over one billion people in the world lack access to safe drinking water. Water-borne disease is a leading cause of illness in the developing world, contributing to the death of on average two million children every year.

The LifeStraw device is a point-of-use microbial water treatment system intended for routine use in low-income areas. The system can filter up to 18,000 litres of water, enough to supply a family of five individuals with microbiologically clean drinking water for three years, thus removing the need for repeat intervention. The system requires no electricity or additional consumables beyond the unit itself. LifeStraw devices comply with the US Environmental Protection Agency’s “Guide Standard and Protocol for Testing Microbiological Water Purifiers,” providing treated water that is as good or better than boiling for microbiological contamination.

The project distributes over one million LifeStraw devices intended to reach over four million people in 19 districts in rural Kenya. The LifeStraw devices are able to treat contaminated drinking water which removes the need for people to treat the water by boiling it in open fire pits using firewood and other sources of combustion. On top of that, the LifeStraw project addresses several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as reducing child mortality, improving people’s health and education, combating disease, and ensuring environmental sustainability. The project employs dozens of locals during the lifespan of the project leading to the improvement of the living standards in the region.

By supporting the LifeStraw project you can assure that it continues delivering access to safe water treatment and educational programs at schools throughout rural Kenya.
