VCS Avoiding Planned Deforestation in Para, Brazil

The CIKEL Brazilian Amazon REDD APD project covers approximately 27,435 hectares of native forest which it aims to protect by avoiding planned deforestation. The project is located in the Paragominas region in Para State, where about 63% (i.e. the highest rate of deforestation in Brazil) of the Amazon Rainforest has been lost. The Amazon, the single largest remaining tropical rainforest on our planet, is home to at least 10% of the worlds flora and fauna while the project area in particular hosts some endangered species such as the endemic Kaapori capuchin, which relies on the rainforest for its survival.

The CIKEL project plans to prevent almost 9.5 million tonnes of CO2e from entering the atmosphere over a 10 year period. Its main objective is the cancelation of the planned deforestation activities and to instead conserve the forest area by continuing limited forest management activities under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification with Low Impact Logging (SFMLIL) practices. Also, the project is intensifying and improving its practices to support sustainable social development, maintaining and improving the biodiversity monitoring in the framework of FCS certification and REDD activities.

By supporting the CIKEL project through the purchase of carbon credits you not only foster the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere but support a plethora of socio-economic and environmental co-benefits arising from the project’s activities

Summary of benefits:

  • Protection of vital tropical rainforest from planned deforestation
  • Over 9 million tonnes of CO2e avoided or removed
  • Protection of biodiversity, including rare endangered species
  • Improving the quality of life of those involved in the project through education, improved medical facilities, and natural resources
  • Employment opportunities for local men and women
  • Opportunities for scientific research
